Quan Chicanos: Our Background and Our Pride de Nephtalí de León va ser publicat per primera vegada en 1972 va ser prohibit pel Sistema Públic de Biblioteques de Dallas (Texas) i el seu autor va ser «escortat fora» de l'escola a la que assistia (Lubbock High) per policies armats. En aquella època, la paraula «terrorista» no s'utilitzava, però va ser acusat de «revolucionari». Aquesta obra va aparèixer com a acció i reacció contra les agències de seguretat particularment institucionalitzades de supremacia blanca. Aquest llibre va constituir 'i encara constitueix' una contribució pionera a un nou naixement transcendental: una nova estètica d'un poble ressuscitat.
