Adam Bede was the first novel written by George Eliot. It was published pseudonymously, even though Evans was a well-published and highly respected scholar of her time. It tells the story of Adam Bede, an earnest and virtuous carpenter who is betrayed by his love, Hetty Sorrel. The bitter and tragic consequences of her actions shake the very foundations of their serene rural community.
